JOB SUMMARY
Publicist or Senior Publicist to lead all aspects of publicity for books, expert campaigns, and other literary projects. This role coordinates national, regional, and local publicity in the U.S. and Canada; works directly and independently with authors, in-house publicists, marketers, and editors, and the media; and creates and executes campaigns on time and with great results. Beyond securing coverage, the publicist helps our authors and experts build lasting platforms, positioning them as go-to voices in their fields. The right publicist will bring their own media and author relationships to the job and will deepen them over time through virtual and in-person meetings. The role includes some staff oversight of our publicity and marketing assistants, delegation, mentorship, and new business development. P1M is a small firm and other tasks may be assigned across PR, communications, marketing, social media, and branding as needed.

What We’re Looking For

  • Leadership: Takes ownership of campaigns from start to finish, makes sound independent decisions, delegates clearly, and mentors junior staff. Sets the tone for the team through reliability, reason under pressure, and good judgment.
  • Creativity: Brings fresh, strategic thinking to every campaign: the unexpected angle, the timely news hook, the outlet no one else thought to pitch.
  • Author support and kindness: Understands that publishing a book is deeply personal. Treats every author with warmth, patience, and respect; communicates honestly and generously; and makes clients feel supported and well cared for throughout their campaign. Extends the same kindness to colleagues.
  • Expert positioning and platform building: Has helped authors and experts become trusted resources for the media, turning their expertise into commentary, op-eds, bylines, podcast appearances, and speaking opportunities that build an audience and a platform that outlasts a single book.

      PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

      Campaigns and Media
      • Manage book campaigns from beginning to end, including booking events, radio, podcast, and television interviews; pitching for reviews in print and online; and pitching for print and online feature coverage, and coverage in newsletters/Substacks.
      • Identify the best and most appropriate audiences for assigned projects; research and build excellent media lists that require little editing; and pitch books and authors to all appropriate venues.
      • Research and write excellent press releases, pitch letters, and other publicity materials that require little editing.
      • Edit opeds, essays, and adapted excerpts with thoughtfulness and care.
      • Maintain and foster media contacts through research, in-person meetings, and Zoom meetings.
      • Maintain publicity updates, campaign trackers, and wrap-up memos, and keep clients abreast of all developments during their campaign.

      Expert Positioning and Platform Building

      • Develop positioning strategies that establish authors and experts as go-to sources for the media in their areas of expertise.
      • Identify and pursue ongoing opportunities for expert commentary, op-eds, bylines, news-driven pitching, podcasts, and speaking engagements.
      • Help clients build platforms and audiences that extend beyond publication, including advising on media readiness, talking points, and messaging.
      • Be a resource to our media colleagues by only contacting them with applicable experts and being thoughtful with when and how to approach them.

      Author and Client Care

      • Independently communicate with authors and editorial and marketing staff about publicity achieved, reporting on individual titles at meetings or via regular email updates to the client and publisher, and make smart and effective decisions around client communication.
      • Support authors through the ups and downs of a campaign: set realistic expectations, share news promptly, and celebrate wins.
      • Smartly manage scope creep and gently reorient clients back to the core plan.

      Leadership and Team

      • Provide staff oversight, delegate responsibilities, and mentor junior team members, assistants, and interns.
      • Effectively use ClickUp to set up campaigns, delegate and deliver tasks on time, take notes, communicate with the team, and schedule review of materials on time and within scope.
      • Keep Sarah notified of all problems, challenges, or hurdles that we might need to triage, brainstorm, or fix, so she is not taken by surprise if we must break issues to the client.*
      • Work with Sarah to plan and map publicity campaigns.

      New Business and Firm Growth

      • Assess incoming projects, participate in new business calls, and create creative and strategic proposals when occasionally asked.
      • Work with the marketing team to create content marketing that promotes P1M’s business interests.

      JOB REQUIREMENTS:
      • Minimum of 4 years of book publicity experience at a publishing house, agency, or independent firm.
      • Demonstrated experience with expert positioning and author platform building.
      • Established relationships with key print, broadcast, online, podcast, and newsletter contacts.
      • Experience leading campaigns independently; experience supervising or mentoring staff preferred.
      • A creative, enthusiastic, and energetic approach to exploring opportunities for clients.
      • At ease pitching media, supporting authors, and juggling multiple projects at once.
      • Excellent writing and research skills.
      • Familiarity with Cision, Muck Rack, Publicity Assistant, ClickUp, and the MS Office Suite.
